Town Hall

Town hall is one of Westport’s oldest buildings and is a designated heritage site.

History of Westport Town Hall

  • 1842 – At the October session of the Johnstown District Council the By-Law #143 was provided for the erection of a town hall for North Crosby Township at Westport.
  • 1846 – The contract for the building was given to Alba Taggart & Noah Halliday (first elected reeve of NorthCrosby) for $300.
  • 1853 – The hall was built primarily out of limestone on the land known then as the Fair Grounds and at that time was used as a school.
  • 1904 – Westport was incorporated as a Village and North Crosby Township sold the hall to the Corporation of the Village of Westport.
  • 1921- The ground floor was used as a fire house and jail. 2 more jail cells were added to the existing one.
  • 1923 – A new chemical fire engine was purchased and the ground floor was finished with beaver board.
  • 1930- A new pumper engine was added and two jail cells were removed to make room for it.
  • 1945 – A larger pumper engine was purchased and required new wider doors and a cement approach was added.
  • 1949 – The municipal office was built upstairs.
  • 1953 – The remaining part of the second floor was remodeled into a modern hall.
  • 1955 – A Hydro office was built at the side of the hall.
  • 1958 – Another cell was obtained from the county and installed.
